Childhood Toys Essay

Myspace Backgrounds

As a child there were certain toys that I played with a lot more than other toys that I had. There were toys that I absolutely loved and then I had toys that I might have played with a few times and then they were left alone. Having a sister that was only a year younger than me meant that I always had someone to play with. She and I pretty much loved the same toys since we were always playing together.

The things that I loved playing with were my swing set, the swimming pool, and my bike. My sister, Tiffany, and I used to play on our swing set all the time. We loved being outside. We had a swing set that had two swings and a slide. We loved swinging and climbing on that swing set. Sometimes we would be all over that swing set just swinging and climbing on it. Doing just that one day I fell off and broke my wrist, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to play on it after I was better. When we were children we got an above ground swimming pool that was three feet deep. Tiffany and I loved playing in that pool when it was hot outside we would come home from school and beg Mom to let us go play in it. During the summer we were out there two or three times a day playing in it. It was a great way to stay cool and was always fun to play in. As a child I was always in love with bicycles. Even before I could ride I loved watching and running after the other kids in my neighborhood when they rode their bikes. When I was eight in elementary school I won a bike at school, but I didn’t want it because I loved the bike I had so I gave it to my sister Tiffany because she didn’t have one of her own yet.

Tradition has labeled some toys as boy toys and some as girl toys. I think that all the activities and toys I mentioned above are neutral. I do not think any of them is clearly a girl thing or a boy thing. I think swimming, bike riding, and swing sets are unisex things. Boys and girls both play with them. My parents really did not mind the toys that my sister and I chose to play with. My dad would fix our bikes and swing set for us when something was wrong with them and mom really did not mind our choice of toys. My grandma though she though Tiffany and I were little wild children. When we weren’t riding our bikes as fast as we could and climbing on the swing set and swimming we were climbing trees and playing in them. My grandma called my mom on numerous occasions to tell her we were out there in them trees again and for her to hurry out there and get us down before we fell and broke a bone.

In the future I think that toys should not be separated into girl and boy toys. I think that children should be free to choose the toys that interest them the most without society and their families telling them that these toys are ok to play with while those toys are not for you. I think that in the future people will be more open to letting children play with whatever toys they want to play with.
